ASDA backs Hounslow Community FoodBox for people in crisis

A new food bank scheme called Hounslow Community FoodBox, which will provide emergency supplies for local residents in crisis, has won the backing of the ASDA superstore in Hounslow which will be its main partner in the area.

The idea for Hounslow Community FoodBox has been developed by the London Borough of Hounslow and the Hounslow Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations (HFTRA) with the aim of involving residents and local groups in working together to prevent and relieve poverty, as well as creating new employment and work experience opportunities.

The ASDA superstore in Hounslow will provide a collection point for shoppers to donate non-perishable items for Hounslow Community FoodBox and, together with partners and volunteers from the scheme, hosted its first collection days in the store between 28-30 March.

Councillor Steve Curran, who devised Hounslow Community FoodBox, attended the first collection day. He said: “We are thrilled with the response from local people, all their generous donations will help make a real difference to local people who are in need. This is such an important and valuable resource for this community and I’m delighted at how quickly we, along with the HFTRA residents and our fantastic partners, ASDA, have managed to get it all up and running.”

Varindar Kaur, Community Champion, together with Store Manager Lee Randall at ASDA in Hounslow, were pleased to see such a turnout of local people at the first collection days. Varindar Kaur said: “We are really pleased to be involved with the FoodBox scheme – it is a fantastic idea and will really help those that are in need in our local community.”

Hounslow Council, HFTRA and local groups working with those in need, will help to identify families and other residents in crisis and in need of emergency food.

Distribution of the non-perishable food boxes will begin in May and will work on a voucher system, with recipients being given vouchers by the FoodBox partners which they will be able to exchange for a FoodBox.

For further information, including application forms for either of the two positions being advertised for FoodBox Co-ordinator and FoodBox Administrator, telephone HFTRA at the Alf Chandler Centre in Benson Close on 0208 577 5596.
